sequence of tense কাকে বলে
Sequence of tense অর্থ
হলো Tense-এর ‘ক্রম’। অর্থ্যাৎ, যে সব নিয়ম দ্বারা subordinate
clause-এর tense-এর রূপ নির্নয় করা হয় তাকে Sequence of tense বলে ।

নিম্নে sequence
of tense rules সঠিকভাবে ব্যাখ্যা করা হলো
Rule-1 : যদি
Principal clause-এর verb present বা future tense-এ থাকে তবে Subordinate clause-এর
verb যে কোনো Tense-এ হতে পারে। যেমন:
i. He says that he
will go.
ii. He says that he
killed a snake.
iii. He will say that
he will marry a handsome girl.
iv. She says that she
is cooking rice.
Rule-2 : Principal
clause-এর verb past tense-এ থাকলে subordinate clause-এর verb past tense-এ হয়ে থাকে
। যেমন:
i. He said that he
did the work.
ii. The man said that
he had bought a car.
iii. She remarked
that she would not mix with bad boy.
Rule-3 : কিন্তু
Principal clause-এর verb যদি past tense এবং subordinate clause-টিতে যদি
universal truth বা চিরন্তন সত্য বা অভ্যাসগত সত্য প্রকাশ পায় তবে সেই
subordinate clause-এর verb-টি present tense-এ হবে। যেমন:
i. The teacher said
that honesty is the best policy.
ii. My grandfather
said that birds of a same feather flock together.
Rule 4: Principal
clause-এ past tense থাকা সত্ত্বেও যদি subordinate clause-এ could/
might/would/ought to ইত্যাদি থাকে, তবে তাদের পর মূল verb present form-এ থাকবে ।
যেমন:
i. He said that he
would go home.
ii. Ria said that he
ought to look after his grandfather.
iii. I knew when he
used to read newspaper.
Rule-5: Subordinate
clause টি যদি adjective- এর ন্যায় কাজ করে তবে principal clause-এর verb যে কোনো
tense- এ হওয়া সত্ত্বেও subordinate clause-এর verb যে কোনো tense-এ হতে পারে। যেমন:
i. This is the school
where I lived.
ii. That was the girl
whom I love still now.
Rule-6 : Subordinate
clause-এ যদি তুলনামুলক কিছু ব্যক্ত হয়, তবে principal clause-এর verb যে কোনো
tense হওয়ার সাথে সাথে subordinate clause-এর verb ও যে কোনো tense-এ হতে পারে। যেমন:
i. She is as
beautiful as her mother was.
ii. My mother loves
me more than she loved my elder brother.
iii. I know it better
than you knew.

Rule-7 : It is high
time দ্বারা principal clause শুরু হলে subordinate clause-টি অবশ্যই past tense-এ
হয়। যেমন:
i. It is high
time we made love.
ii. It is high time
she went home.
Rule-8: If যুক্ত বাক্যের
principal clause-টি future tense-এ হলে subordinate clause-টি present tense,
principal clause-এ would + মূল verb থাকলে subordinate clause-টি past tense এবং
principal clause-এ would/might/could+ have + p.p হলে subordinate clause-টি past
perfect হবে। যেমন:
i. If you come, I
will go.
ii. If you had come,
I would have gone.
ii. If you came, I
would go.
Rule-9: As if ও As
though যুক্ত বাক্যের principal clause-টি present tense হলে subordinate clause- টি
অবশ্যই past tense-এ হবে। Be verb-এর ক্ষেত্রে person নির্বিশেষে were বসবে। যেমন:
i. He walks as
if he were a leader.
ii. The man speaks as
if he went mad.
আবার, As if/As
though-যুক্ত বাক্যের ক্ষেত্রে principal clause-টি past indefinite হলে
subordinate clause-টি past perfect -হবে। He spoke as though I had not spoken.
Rule-10: Principal
clause- এ I wish/I fancy থাকলে subordinate clause-টি অবশ্যই past tense-এ হবে। যেমন:
i. I wish I were your
lover.
ii. I wish I became
an M.P.
Rule-11: Sentence- এ
lest থাকলে principal clause-এ যে কোনো tense থাকুক না কেন subordinate clause-এ
should + মূল verb বসে। যেমন:
i. Walk fast lest you
should miss the train.
ii. We hurried lest
we should fail to go there in time.
Rule-12: Since যুক্ত বাক্যের
principal clause-টি present tense (indefinite বা perfect) হলে subordinate
clause-টির verb past tense-এ হবে। আবার principal clause-টি past tense থাকলে
subordinate clause-টি Past perfect হবে। যেমন:
i. It is five days
since he came here.
ii. It was five days
since he had gone there.

3. Rajon told me that
he (go) next day.
4. He went to the
town where you (live).
5. He asked me if I
(help) him.
6. She says that she
(love) me.
7. The leader talked

8. The teacher said
that the earth (move) round the sun.
9. They wished that
Allah (may) bless me.
10. You will say that
you (be) ill.
