Rule-01:
কোনো Sentence এ Subject টি Singular হলে Verb ও Singular এবং Subjectটি
Plural হলে Verbs ও Plural হয়। যেমন
(i)
Mr. Robertson is a lawyer.
(ii)
He says it makes him look important.
(iii)
My parents are always busy with their work.
(iv)
Vehicles create traffic jam.
Note:
মনে রাখতে হবে, Verb এর সাথে s/es যুক্ত হলে Verbটি Singular কিন্তু Noun এর সাথে s/es হলে
Nounটি Plural হয়। যেমন:
Rule
- 02: দুটি Singular Subject যদি এক ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে বুঝায়, তবে Verb টি
Singular হয়। কিন্তু ভিন্ন ব্যক্তিকে বুঝালে Verbটি Plural হয়। যেমন:
(i)
The principal and secretary of the college is coming.
(ii)
The principal and the secretary of the college are coming.
প্রথম
Sentence এ অধ্যক্ষ এবং সেক্রেটারি এক-ই ব্যক্তি, বিধায় Singular Verb 'is' ব্যবহার
করা হয়েছে। কিন্তু দ্বিতীয় Sentence এ, অধ্যক্ষ এবং সেক্রেটারি আলাদা ব্যক্তি; বিধায়
Plural Verb 'are' ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে। এখন প্রশ্ন হচ্ছে—দ্বিতীয় Sentence এ অধ্যক্ষ এবং সেক্রেটারি যে আলাদা ব্যক্তি তা চেনার
উপায় ‘কী? – মনে রাখবে, এক ব্যক্তির ক্ষেত্রে Article একবার,
কিন্তু ভিন্ন ব্যক্তি ক্ষেত্রে দু'বার Article ব্যবহৃত হয়।
Rule-03:
দুই বা ততোধিক Singular Subject 'and' দ্বারা যুক্ত হলে Verb এর Plural Form হয়। যেমন:
(i)
Air and water are two important elements of the environment.
(ii)
Gold and silver are precious (মূল্যবান) metals.
(iii)
Sifat and Rifat are students.
Rule-04:
' And ' দ্বারা যুক্ত দুটি Noun এর মধ্যে মিলনার্থক সম্পর্ক থাকলে, Verb সাধারণত
Singular হয়। যেমন:
(i)
Bread and butter is my favorite breakfast menu.
(ii)
Slow and steady wins the race.
Rule-05:
এক বা একাধিক Singular Subject এর পূর্বে each, every, one, any' থাকলে, Singular
Verb ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন:
(i)
Each boy and each girl was given a prize.
(ii)
Every boy and every girl has been given 50 taka.
Rule-06:
বিভিন্ন Person এর Subject 'or, nor, either............or, neither
............nor' দ্বারা যুক্ত হলে, Verb এর নিকটবর্তী Subject এর Number ও Person
অনুযায়ী হয় ৷ যেমন:
(i)
Either he or his brothers have done this.
(ii)
Neither you nor he is to blame.
(iii)
Neither he nor they are to blame..
Rule-07:
'Somebody, someone' এরপর Singular Verb-কিন্তু 'some boys, some toys etc.' এর পর
Plural Verb ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন:
(i)
Someone has stolen the bag.
(ii)
Some boys have failed in the examination.
Rule-08:
'Any, none, each, every, either, neither, one' - এরপরে 'of' থাকলে Verb Singular
হয়। যেমন:
(i)
None of them was present in the meeting.
(ii)
Either of them has done it.
(iii)
One of the boys is present today.
Rule-09:
অনেক সময় Prepositional Phrase দ্বারা Subject বিচ্ছিন্ন থাকে। এ ক্ষেত্রে মনে রাখতে
হবে, Preposition এর পূর্বের অংশ হলো Subject। এই পূর্বের Subject এর Number ও
Person অনুযায়ী Verb ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন:
(i)
One of the students is absent.
(ii)
The colour of his eyes is blue.
(ii)
The flowers in the garden are beautiful to look at.
(iv)
The roads in Dhaka city have damaged in many congested areas recently.
Rule-10:
কিছু কিছু Noun রয়েছে, যেগুলো আকারে Plural হলেও অর্থের দিক থেকে Singular; যেমন:
population, public, crowd, army, congress, committee, team, government, family,
public, pair, dozen, scenery, knowledge, hundred, thousand, furniture,
machinery, information, bread, money, advice, poetry, gallows, ethics,
mathematics, physics, news, electronics, dynamics, 3/4.........dollars,
3/4.......miles etc. এর পরে Singular Verb ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন:
(i)
Ill news runs a pace.( দুঃসংবাদ বাতাসের আগে যায়।)
(ii)
Mathematics is my interesting subject.
(iii)
The United States of America is a developed country.
Rule-11:
কিছু কিছু Noun রয়েছে, যেগুলোর সাধারণত Singular হয় না; এদের পরে Plural
Verb ব্যবহৃত হয় ৷ যেমন:
People,
spectacles, trousers, scissors, brances, clothes, goods, headquarters,
vegetables, laws, police, cattle, folk, circumstances, gentry etc. উদাহরণ:
(i)
His circumstances are not good.
(ii)
People do not eat the same food.
(iii)
Vegetables contain vitamin.
(iv)
Police have been posted in different places.
Rule-12:
Relative Pronoun (who, whose, whom, which, that) এর পূর্ববর্তী Noun বা Pronoun এর
Number এবং Person অনুযায়ী Verb ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন:
(i)
It is I who am your friend.
(ii)
It is you who are my friend.
Rule-13:
Distance (দূরত্ব), money এবং time এর ক্ষেত্রে Singular Verb ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন
(i)
2 miles is not a long distance.
(ii)
100 years is a long time to spend.
Rule-14:
Arithmetical Operations (গাণিতিক ক্রিয়া) এরপর Singular Verb ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন:
(i)
Addition (যোগ) : Five plus five is ten.
(ii)
Subtraction (বিয়োগ) : Ten minus five is five.
(ii)
Multiplication (গুণ) : Three times three is nine.
(iv)
Division (ভাগ) : Ten divided by two is five.

Rule-15:
Interrogative Sentence এর ক্ষেত্রে, Interrogative Pronoun বা Interrogative
Adverb এর পরবর্তী Subject এর Number, Person এবং Tense অনুযায়ী Verb নির্ধারিত
হয়। যেমন:
(i)
What do you want?
(ii)
What does she do?
(iii)
Where did they go yesterday?
Rule-16:
Sentence এ 'be' Verb টি Bracket এ থাকলে, Subject এর Number, Person এবং Tense অনুযায়ী
Verb নির্ধারিত হয়। যেমন:
(i)
He (be) a student. -He is a student.
(ii)
They (be) good students. -They are good students.
(iii)
You (be) ill yesterday. -You were ill yesterday.
Rule-17:
'One of the' এর পরের Noun/Pronoun টি Plural হলেও Verb টি হয় Singular । যেমন:
(i)
One of the boys (be) present today.
=One
of the boys is present today.
(ii)
One of the students has stood GPA-5 in the SSC examination.
Rule-18:
একই দৈর্ঘ্য, পরিমাণ বা স্থান বুঝালে Subject দেখতে Plural হলেও Verb টি
Singular হয়। যেমন:
Forty
miles (be) a long way.
=Forty
miles is a long way.
Rule-19:
Sentence এর শুরুতে Verb থাকলে, তার সাথে 'ing' যোগ করাকে Gerund বলে। এরূপ গঠিত
Word (verb+ing) Sentence এ Noun এর কাজ করে। আর Noun, Sentence এর Subject হিসেবে
বসতে পারে। এরূপ Subject সর্বদাই Singular এবং এর পরে Singular Verb ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন:
(i)
(Rise) early is a good habit.
=
Rising early is a good habit.
(ii)
(Sleep) is necessary to life.
=
Sleeping is necessary to life.
Rule-20:
Gerund, Infinitive (to+verb এর base form), Verbal Noun (The+verb এর সাথে
ing+of) এর পরের Sentence এর Subject হলে Verb টি Singular হয়। যেমন:
(i)
Making a cup of tea needs water, sugar and milk.
(ii)
To take drugs leads a man to death.
(iii)
The practice of politics during student life is called student politics.
Rule-21:
Gerund যদি কখনো শুধু Noun এর কাজ করে তাহলে তাকে Verbal Noun বলে। Verbal Noun
(The+verb এর সাথে ing+of) এর পরের Verbটি Singular হয়। যেমন:
(i)
The (taking) of exercise is good for health.
=
The taking of exercise is good for health.
(ii)
The (read) of newspaper is a good habit.
=
The reading of newspaper is a good habit.
Rule-22:
Uncountable Noun (water, air, tea, sugar, environment, furniture, kindness,
rainfall (8), reputation, wood, paper, gum, courtesy, earth, bread, oxygen,
smoke, Bangla, English, freedom) এর পর Singular Verb ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন:
(i)
Air is an important element of the environment.
(ii)
Water plays a vital role in agriculture.
Rule-23:
'More than one' Singular হিসেবে গণ্য হয়। তাই এর পরের Verb এবং Nounটি Singular হয়।
কিন্তু, More than, এর পর Plural হলে Verb টিও Plural হয়। যেমন:
(i)
More than one (boys) is absent.
=
More than one boy is absent.
(ii)
More than two (boy) are absent.
=
More than two boys are absent.
Rule-24:
একাংশ ব্যতীত সকল ভগ্নাংশ Plural, কিন্তু এদের পরে Singular Verb ব্যবহৃত হয়।
যেমন:
(i)
Two thirds of the work has been done.
(ii)
One third of the work has been done.
Note:
এরূপ ভগ্নাংশের পরের Noun টি Singular হলে Verb টিও Singular হয়, কিন্তু ভগ্নাংশের
পরের Noun টি Plural হলে Verb টিও Plural হয়। যেমন:
Two
thirds of the apples have been distributed.
Rule-25:
A number of এর পরের Noun টি Plural হলে Verb টিও Plural হয়। কিন্তু, 'The number
of” এর পর Plural Noun হওয়া সত্ত্বেও Verb টি
Singular হয়। যেমন:
(i)
A number of girls are absent.
(ii)
The number of girls is present.
Rule-26:
কিছু Pronoun সর্বদাই Singular হয় এবং এদের পরে Singular Verb ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন:

Rule-27:
কিছু কিছু Pronoun সর্বদাই Plural এবং এদের পর Plural Verb ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন:
(i)
Men usually want to have their own way.
(ii)
People do not eat the same food.
Rule-28:
With, together with, along with, in addition to, as well as, including to,
accompanied with/by দ্বারা দুই বা ততোধিক Subject যুক্ত হলে, প্রথম Subject এর
Person ও Number অনুসারে Verb নির্ধারিত হয়। যেমন:
(i)
Mousumi as well as her friends has done well in the examination.
(ii)
Mr. Ahmed along with his sons was present in the function.
Rule-29:
‘And' এর পর 'no/not' ব্যবহৃত হলে, পূর্ববর্তী
Subject এর Number ও Person অনুসারে Verb নির্ধারিত হয়। যেমন:
Setu
and not her friends has done this.
Rule-30:
Make, helps ও cannot but' এর পর Verb এর Present Form ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন:
(i)
I made him wash my car.
Note:
কিন্তু 'Cannot help' এর পরের Verb এর সাথে 'ing' যুক্ত হয়। যেমন:
I
cannot help laughing
Rule-31:
'All, many, any, more, most, some, who, that, which' এ সব Pronoun কাকে নির্দেশ করে,
তার উপর নির্ভর করে Verb ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন:
(i)
Most of the sand is washed by the tide.
(ii)
Some of the problems have been solved.
Rule-32:
'Two-thirds, all, half of, the greater part of, the rest of, some of' ইত্যাদির পরের
Nounটি Countable হলে, Verb টি Plural এবং Noun টি Uncountable হলে Verb টি
Singular হয়। যেমন:
(i)
Two thirds of the apples have been distributed.
(ii)
The greater part of the bread has been distributed.
Rule-33:
'Every' দ্বারা যুক্ত Sentence এর Verb স্বভাবতই Singular, কিন্তু Sentence এর মধ্যে
যদি কোন Plural Item থাকে, তবে Verbটি অবশ্যই Plural হয়। যেমন:
(i)
Every man and woman was quarelling.
(ii)
Every cat and two dogs were fighting.
Rule-34:
গ্রন্থ, কোম্পানি, সঙ্গঠন, ম্যাগাজিন-প্রভৃতি Subject হিসেবে বসলে Verbটি Singular
হয়। যেমন:
(i)
Proctor and Gamble is a multinational company.
(ii)
Unilever Bangladesh Ltd. is a famous manufacturing company all over the world.
Rule-35:
There দ্বারা কোন Sentence শুরু হলে, দেখতে হবে এর পরবর্তী Subject টি Singular না
Plural? Subject টি Singular হলে, There এর পর Singular Verb (is/was/has) এবং
Subject টি Plural হলে, Plural Verb (are/were/have) ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন:
(i)
There (be) a pond in our village.
=There
is a pond in our village.
(ii)
There (be) two ponds in our village.
=There
are two ponds in our village.
